Two of the Most Challenging Indian Trekking Expeditions of All Time — Kang Yatse Trek and Goechala Trek
India is a land with rich geographic diversity. With the Himalayas neatly stretching from the Northernmost corner to the eastern end of the country, there is immense scope for some of the most action-packed and cinematic trekking expeditions of all time here.
If experiencing waves of adrenaline rushes along challenging and vigor-demanding trails is something that interests you, the Kang Yatse Trek and the Goechala Trek must be two expeditions worth trying. Both these expeditions span over 11 days and offer an inexplicable and thrilling ride into the mountains.
KANG YATSE TREK -
The trek to Kang Yatse Peak begins from the exotic town of Leh. Perched at an altitude of 11,500 ft, Leh is an overwhelmingly beautiful town of the Union Territory of Ladakh and remains a hotspot for many trekking ventures.
Since you ought to begin the Kang Yatse Trek from a surprisingly high-altitude region, you must spend an additional day at Leh for smooth acclimatization. Distanced approximately 65 km from Leh is the village of Chilling, where the actual trek to Kang Yatse begins.
A refreshing 2–3 hour long drive from Leh, through the magnetic Hill, and the ‘Zaskar-Indus confluence’ will lead you to the serene village of Chilling, the first stop on the itinerary.
A taxing, steep ascent followed by an easy flat walk along 9 km will further lead you to Skiu, a camping site located on the banks of the confluence of the Markha and Shgri Nala Rivers.
Connecting next is Markha, distanced roughly 20 km from Skiu. The trail from Skiu to Markha is the longest trail on the expedition. It is also comparatively well pathed, as well as commercialized. You will not only cross a few villages this day but also traverse a few meandering and fierce rivers to reach the enchanting Markha Valley lying at an altitude of 12,200 ft. At Markha, you can also visit fort ruins, aesthetic cafes, and a monastery before bringing your day to an end.
Roughly 13 km away from Markha is Thachungtse, the last village of the Markha Valley situated at an elevation of 13,400 ft. As you trek along the trail from Markha to Thachungtse, you will cut paths with the gurgling Markha River several times. Further, as soon as you leave past the Umlung village, you will be able to sight the robust, fierce, and goosebumps-inducing Kang Yatse Peak standing tall and aloof in all its glory. And soon after you traverse the Hankar Village, you will find yourself in the midsts of the refreshing, lush green grasslands of Thachungtse. As you reach closer to Thachungtse, you will find many tea houses where you can sip simmering, strong tea and relish the beauty of the landscape.
Lying 7 km away from Thachungtse is Nimaling, a delightful and adorable site perched at an altitude of 15,400 ft, snuggled amidst refreshing greenery. You can stop by the appeasing Mani Stones and the enchanting Twin Tigu Lakes en route. At this point, the Kang Yatse Peak will appear apparent, magnified, and breathtakingly clear.
Just 2km away from Nimaling is the Base Camp resting at an altitude of 16,700 ft. A moderate grade trek from Nimaling will take you to the Base Camp in not more than 3 hours. At first, you will climb along loose gravel and then descend to the other side to cross a river and reach the campsite. You will have the rest of the day to rest and acclimatize to the new altitude. Indulge in the soul-stirring sightseeing of the mountainscapes around you and relish the peace-bringing surroundings while you can.
You will rest as well as prepare for the ultimate leg of the expedition the next day. You will brush up on a couple of mountaineering techniques and retire early to wake up at midnight for the summit attempt.
The Kang Yatse Summit lies approximately 5 km away from the Base Camp. The trail from the Base Camp will take you through scree, loose gravel, and moraines. You might even have to rope up depending upon the snowfall at that time. From the top of the Kang Yatse Summit, you will be able to catch stunning panoramic views of the beautiful Zaskar Range and the Karakoram and K2 Peaks. If you reach the top of the summit, well in advance, you might also be able to witness a transfixing sunrise like none other. After admiring the eagle’s eye view of the mountainscapes from the Kang Yatse Peak, you will retrace the route to descend to the Base Camp the same day.
The Kang Yatse Trek is brought to an end with an enticing trek to Chokdo perched at an altitude of 12,100 ft via Kongmaru La Pass, situated at 17,100 ft. A breezing drive from here to Leh distanced 60 km will bring the Kang Yatse expedition to full circle.
GOECHALA TREK
Spanning over approximately 90 km, the trek to Goechala is an excellent, thrilling, and dramatic pursuit. Nestled in the refreshing state of Sikkim, Goechala is one of the most robust and mighty peaks in the landscape, rising to an altitude of roughly 15,100 ft.
